From Ginny Mayer

imageWelcome to the official web site of Ginny for State Senate. Thank you for visiting.

I am running for the position of California State Senator, 35th District, which includes most of coastal Orange as well as a number of inland cities. It’s an extremely diverse district, encompassing major industries, the Bolsa Chica Wetlands, a “mini” Silicon Valley, several universities including UC Irvine, and some of the most magnificent beaches in the world.

Today we are facing critical issues: a costly and wasteful healthcare system that puts adequate care out of reach for millions; oil dependency that worsens global warming and endangers our national security; and a state budget crisis that threatens social services for the needy and undermines our public schools at a time when quality education is more crucial than ever. California is a contender on the world economic scene; by itself it would be the 7th or 8th largest economy in the world. With our region’s diversity, creativity and economic potential we have the ability to take a leadership role in addressing the problems that we face locally and globally.

We’ve got a lot of work to do in tackling current problems, and if we want practical solutions which reflect Democratic values – concern for the middle class and the underprivileged while promoting economic health – it is not enough to have a Democratic majority in the Senate; we need a supermajority – which means 17 state senators, not just the 15 we have now, who can still be blocked in Sacramento by the Republican minority. As a Harvard Ph.D. with a lifelong commitment to Democratic values, and leadership experience in aerospace and education, I hope you will help me become part of that supermajority through contributions, volunteering, and attending upcoming events. My goal is to bring my analytical skills and practical knowledge to finding practical solutions to the problems we face. Please join me in making this possible.

Thanks again for visiting my campaign web site, and please take a look around. I hope to see you soon at one of the upcoming events.

Sincerely,

9/22/08 - Obama’s in the Lead

I am feeling cheered by recent polls (including Gallup, Rasmussen and others) that are now showing Barack Obama once again in the lead.  It isn’t clear as to exactly what has caused this. Obviously, McCain’s own admission of shortcomings in the field of economics has come back to haunt him, and the public may be unimpressed by his recent ads which lack economic solutions but instead, incongruously, play on his perceived superiority in national security matters.

He implies that the wimps on Wall Street and in the US Congress will cower before his muscular assault: “I’ll reform Wall Street and fix Washington … I’ve taken on tougher guys than this before.” And, Giuliani-like, he even invoked 9/11 when recommending a 9/11-like commission to address the current economic crisis.  Maybe the public was less impressed than hoped for by the attempt to sell national security credentials as economic ones. Then again, the increasing coverage of his inclination toward “factually challenged arguments” may have played a role here too, not to mention the end of the Palin honeymoon.
